Delicious to drink, tea is also privy to many superstitions from everything from the preparation, to the carrying, to the drinking.

Tea is a brewed beverage from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. There are different types and varieties that depend on when the tea leaf is picked, but for the most part tea is the Camellia sinensis tea leaf that is steeped in boiling water, and then drank (usually with milk, sugar, honey, or lemon). It can be iced or served hot, and is the second only to water in beverage consumption.

Teapot Superstitions

These tea superstitions deal with the teapot itself.

  • Leaving the lid off the teapot accidentally shows you may receive bad news from a stranger.
  • When two women pour from the same teapot, one will be pregnant within the year.
  • Spilling some tea from the teapot spout while it is being carried will show that a secret will soon be revealed.
  • Emptying a teapot on a day that fishing will take place will ensure bad fishing results.
  • If one stirs tea while it is in the teapot it shows a quarrel with a friend on the way.
  • Stirring tea in a teapot counter clockwise will have the stirrer stirring up trouble for themselves.

Tea Drink Superstitions

All of these superstitions are for the beverage itself.

  • If there are bubbles on the tea it will signify kisses.
  • Tea that is made a little stronger than normal could signal a new friendship on the way.
  • Spilling tea while in the process of making it will be a good omen.
  • Tea that is made a little weaker than normal could signal a loss of a friendship coming.
  • Placing the milk in your tea before sugar can show a crossing of the path to love, but a chance of never marrying.

Tea Cup Superstitions

These are the superstitions that pertain to the teacup.

  • A teabag tag falling off while the bag is still in the tea cup will show that you will lose something in a week’s time.
  • Moving the tea bubbles from tea cup to mouth without disturbing them with the spoon shows a letter on the way.
  • Putting two teaspoons on the tea cup saucer accidentally will show a wedding or a pregnancy.
  • Sugar left undissolved in the teacup bottom shows that someone is “sweet” on you.

Tea Leaf Superstitions

All of these superstitions will be for tea leaves.

  • Tea that has a tea leaf floating on the top surface of the beverage shows that a letter is on its way.
  • Tea leaves placed in front of the home, in the threshold, will protect home and occupants from evil.
